Studies showed that during tasks involving emotions, people with depression had different activity in a region in the middle of the front of the brain than people without depression. Other studies showed that other frontal areas involved in attentional control are less active in people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Not all brain imaging discoveries had to do with how participants performed tasks. In fact, one of the biggest insights came from observing brain activity when people were asked to do nothing at all! When researchers looked at how similar activity across different brain areas was, they found fascinating networks of resting state activity.

What To Expect During A Brain Scan

Techniques Involving Magnetic Fields
In magnetic resonance imaging , a person is placed inside a machine that generates a strong magnetic field. The magnetic field causes the hydrogen atoms in the bodys cells to move. When the magnetic field is turned off, the hydrogen atoms emit electromagnetic signals as they return to their original positions. Tissues of different densities give off different signals, which a computer interprets and displays on a monitor.
Functional magnetic resonance imaging operates on the same principles, but it shows changes in brain activity over time by tracking blood flow and oxygen levels. The fMRI provides more detailed images of the brains structure, as well as better accuracy in time, than is possible in PET scans . With their high level of detail, MRI and fMRI are often used to compare the brains of healthy individuals to the brains of individuals diagnosed with psychological disorders. This comparison helps determine what structural and functional differences exist between these populations.

How The Test Is Performed
A PET scan requires a small amount of radioactive material . This tracer is given through a vein , usually on the inside of your elbow. Or, you breathe in the radioactive material as a gas.
The tracer travels through your blood and collects in organs and tissues. The tracer helps your health care provider to see certain areas or diseases more clearly.
You wait nearby as the tracer is absorbed by your body. This usually takes about 1 hour.
Then, you lie on a narrow table, which slides into a large tunnel-shaped scanner. The PET scanner detects signals from the tracer. A computer changes the results into 3-D pictures. The images are displayed on a monitor for your provider to read.
You must lie still during the test so that the machine can produce clear images of your brain. You may be asked to read or name letters if your memory is being tested.
The test takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

Can Brain Scans Diagnose Mental Illness
As wonderful as brain scans are, they cannot singlehandedly detect mental illnesses. That doesnt mean images of the brain cant help detect and diagnose mental health conditions, though. When used alongside traditional assessment techniques, brain scans can help narrow down brain abnormalities and confirm mental health diagnoses. A single brain scan probably cant tell you the exact mental health condition you have. But images of your brain can help your doctor understand whats going on with your mental health, confirm your doctors clinical observations, and help them develop an appropriate treatment plan. There are many benefits brain scans provide that help detect, diagnose, and confirm mental health disorders.
What Can Brain Imaging Tell Us About A Single Person
New discoveries about brain functions and disorders are made using brain imaging every day. These findings tell us how most people use different brain areas, or how people with a particular disorder differ from people without that disorder as a group. However, it has been extremely difficult to use brain imaging to tell us information about a single person. So as we mentioned in the previous paragraph, people with depression process emotions differently than non-depressed people, on average. But we havent been able to pinpoint whether one specific person processes emotions differently enough that theyre probably depressed.
As mentioned earlier, some of the difficulty is due to BOLD activations being relatively small, so researchers need to collect data from 20 or 30 participants and average their results together in order to see any effects. Other issues arise from the computational challenges of brain imagingeach image can be made up of 100,000 voxels, so doing statistical analyses on these data have historically taken powerful computers a long time.

Despite promising results using computer algorithms to predict whether someone has a disease or not, we wont be replacing MDs with MRIs anytime soon. For one, most studies have been successful at picking out who has a disorder from the pool of study participants that were included because they had the disorder or because they didnt . It is much more difficult to pick someone out of the general population and accurately predict which disorder they may havethe resting state networks of two very different disorders could actually look quite similar.
However, it is extremely encouraging that researchers may soon be able to make accurate medical predictions with a data-driven approach. Diagnosis of mental health disorders is notoriously subjective, with clinicians diagnosing patients differently. Recent advances in human brain imaging show that diagnosing medical disorders will be more consistent and more accurate in the near future.

Tell your doctor if youre pregnant or believe you could be pregnant. The test might be unsafe for your fetus.

Over the years, scientists have developed many techniques to observe whats going on in the human brain as we think or move. Unfortunately, few of the insights we have made so far have resulted in any improvements in standard clinical mental care. Recent advances in neuroimaging may be changing this. Studies from the past few years have shown that various measures of brain activity and structure can predict who will develop certain mental disorders as well as how individuals will respond to particular treatments. In fact, measurements of brain activity can be better at diagnosing depression than standard clinical assessments. This is just one of many examples of modern neuroimaging techniques beginning to contribute to how we diagnose and treat diseases.

Comparison Of Eeg And Fmri
EEG and fMRI have their respective strengths and weaknesses. Ideally experiments employing these methods must be carefully designed and conducted to maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. The most salient feature of EEG is its high temporal resolution at a level of milliseconds. It is also a direct measure of neuronal response. Nevertheless, EEG has several limitations. First, EEG is only sensitive to post-synaptic potentials generated in the superficial layers of the cortex. It is not sensitive to neuronal responses from structures that are deep in the brain, such as the striatum or hippocampus. In addition, currents that are tangential to the skull make little contribution to the EEG signal. Second, the spatial resolution of EEG is very low. Third, it is almost impossible to reconstruct a unique intracranial current source distribution for a given EEG signal, although substantial recent progress has been made in this area.

Combining With Other Methods
It is common to combine fMRI signal acquisition with tracking of participants’ responses and reaction times. Physiological measures such as heart rate, breathing, skin conductance , and eye movements are sometimes captured simultaneously with fMRI. The method can also be combined with other brain-imaging techniques such as transcranial stimulation, direct cortical stimulation and, especially, EEG. The fMRI procedure can also be combined with near-infrared spectroscopy to have supplementary information about both oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin.
The fMRI technique can complement or supplement other techniques because of its unique strengths and gaps. It can noninvasively record brain signals without risks of ionising radiation inherent in other scanning methods, such as CT or PET scans. It can also record signal from all regions of the brain, unlike EEG/MEG, which are biased toward the cortical surface. But fMRI temporal resolution is poorer than that of EEG since the HR takes tens of seconds to climb to its peak. Combining EEG with fMRI is hence potentially powerful because the two have complementary strengthsâEEG has high temporal resolution, and fMRI high spatial resolution. But simultaneous acquisition needs to account for the EEG signal from varying blood flow triggered by the fMRI gradient field, and the EEG signal from the static field. For details, see EEG vs fMRI.
What Are The Different Parts Of The Brain
The brain can be divided into the cerebrum, brainstem, and cerebellum:
Cerebrum. The cerebrum is composed of the right and left hemispheres. Functions of the cerebrum include: initiation of movement, coordination of movement, temperature, touch, vision, hearing, judgment, reasoning, problem solving, emotions, and learning.
Brainstem. The brainstem includes the midbrain, the pons, and the medulla. What Is A Brain Scan
A brain scan is like an X-ray for your brain. The scan takes very detailed pictures of your brains size, shape, and activity, which helps doctors see and understand whats going on in your mind. The most common types of brain scans include:
- Electroencephalography or EEG, which shows how your brain acts during certain psychological states such as alertness and drowsiness.
- Computerized Tomography or CT, which uses ionizing radiation to take pictures of the structure of your brain.
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI, which uses echo waves to produce pictures of your brain. MRIs also help doctors detect how much grey matter, white matter, and cerebrospinal fluid you have in your brain.
- Positron Emission Tomography or PET, which injects radioactive sugar glucose into your veins through an IV. What Are The Reasons For A Ct Scan Of The Brain
A CT of the brain may be performed to assess the brain for tumors andother lesions, injuries, intracranial bleeding, structural anomalies, particularly whenanother type of examination areinconclusive.
