What Would Happen If We Used 100 Of Our Brain

Don't Miss

What Would Happen If We Could Use 100 Percent Of Our Brain

What If You Used 100% Of Your Brain At The Same Time?

This question originally appeared on Quora. Answer by Yohan John, PhD in Cognitive and Neural Systems.

The idea that we only use 10 percent of our brains is a pernicious myth. The brain is always active. It makes a bit more sense to say that we use 100 percent of the brain all the time, but even this is misleading. Both the 10 percent or 100 percent estimates are not even wrong.

Brain function depends on qualitatively different patterns of activity, rather than quantities of activity. These patterns change depending on what you are doing, so some neurons or groups of neurons become active when others become inactive. Activating all neurons world be like pushing the break and the accelerator of a car at the same time – not a very good idea.

It can actually be dangerous if too many excitatory neurons become active simultaneously. Hyperactivity of groups of neurons is associated with epilepsy and other neurological disorders. When people say “you are only using a fraction of your brain” they are giving a pseudoscientific veneer to a piece of age-old folk knowledge: The perfectly reasonable idea that we are not realizing our full potential as people.

But improving our thoughts and behavior is not a matter of amplifying neural activity. Instead, it is about creating new and beneficial behavioral patterns, which correlate with altered neural activity patterns. So if you want to explore what else you are capable of just look around at people who have changed their habits.

Create Interest In Every Work

Friends, you also know that unless you are interested in something, you can neither do it nor learn it well. To use the 100% of your brain, you have to create interest inside that work. If you can do this, then it will be very easy for you to increase your brain abilities. So whether you do a small work or a big job, you must take an interest in it. We know it is difficult but it is not impossible. You can do it

Did you never notice that when you are doing some boring work, you feel like one minute one hour? But if you are doing any fun work then one hour feels like one minute. All this is a wonder of interest. The more work you are interested in, the more you will be able to stay inside that work.

Friends, interest in your work or learning makes your brainmore active and this increases your learning rate. And by increasing the rateof learning, a person learns quickly, which also increases the abilities of thebrain rapidly.

Three: Build A Proper Environment

Weve got our brain prepped for learning, weve identified the skills we want to learn or the goal we hope to accomplish, now its time to build an environment for success.

You know how I had you build a Batcave to help you build better habits? Were going to do the same to help you become Limitless.

Step One: STOP F***ING MULTITASKING! We like to think were the masters of multi-tasking, but it absolutely ruins us when it comes to learning and being more productive. Every time you shift from writing your book to watching a youtube video, your productivity suffers. Every time you swap between your work and gchat window to talk to coworkers and friends, your level of creativity and concentration suffers.

If you want to be more productive while sitting at your computer, focus completely on one task. If you are going to learn a language, set aside time to learn that language and do nothing else.

Step Two: Remove Distractions. All of them. I used to think that I could ONLY work at night. I would struggle to write all day long, and then suddenly, at 9 or 10PM, I became a focused machine, cranking out content like nobodys business. I just assumed it was because I was a night owlnope. Its because I allowed myself to get distracted VERY easily, because everybody was awake and talking to me all day. I spent all day in Gmail, on Gchat, reading IGN, and Reddit. Then, when everybody else was in bed, I would finally get stuff done.

Four: Use Caffeine Properly

This is the hack most closely related to the drug NZT in Limitless.

Most of us use caffeine to wake us up after a late night and early morning. Just think of how many Facebook messages you see from friends that say something along the lines of dont talk to me yet, I havent had my caffeine.

Its true: when we become addicted to caffeine , its effectiveness is severely diminished, and we have to use caffeine to get us up to our normal baseline. Without it, we are distant, irritable, and awkward.

Instead, try aiming to use caffeine for bouts of hyper-focused activity.

As we point out in our Guide to Caffeine, we need to closely manage our tolerance to caffeine. Personally, I try not to have it every day, and oftentimes take a week or two off from consuming it at all. Then, when I need to get hyper-focused and accomplish a ton of writing , black coffee, green tea, or Yerba Mate tea is enough to get my brain focused on the task at hand Its now 3pm and Ive been writing since 8AM!

Sure, its no NZT, but as this PubMed study shows:

caffeine can significantly affect cognitive performance, mood and thirst at doses within and even lower than the range of amounts of caffeine contained in a single serving of popular caffeine-containing drinks.

    Debunking The 10% Myth

What would happen if we used 100 of our brain ...
    • Ph.D., Materials Science and Engineering, Northwestern University
    • B.A., Chemistry, Johns Hopkins University
    • B.A., Cognitive Science, Johns Hopkins University

You may have heard that humans only use 10 percent of their brain power, and that if you could unlock the rest of your brainpower, you could do so much more. You could become a super genius, or acquire psychic powers like mind reading and telekinesis. However, there is a powerful body of evidence debunking the 10 percent myth. Scientists have consistently shown that humans use their entire brain throughout each day.

Despite the evidence, the 10 percent myth has inspired many references in the cultural imagination. Films like “Limitless” and “Lucy” depict protagonists who develop godlike powers thanks to drugs that unleash the previously inaccessible 90 percent of the brain. A 2013 study showed that about 65 percent of Americans believe the trope, and a 1998 study showed that a full third of psychology majors, who focus on the workings of the brain, fell for it.

What Is Mean By Using 100% Of Your Brain

A human being uses every part of his brain. If any part of the human brain is damaged, then some problem starts inside some work. Friends we mean how to use 100% of your brain?. It is not inside the article that you are not using all parts of your brain. And scientists have only been able to prove that a human being uses 100 percent of all parts of his brain. Here we are talking about those abilities, not the parts of the brain. Talking about the skills that your brain can learn. Cant your mind learn a lot? How many things do you know? If you compare things learned and your learning abilities, it will be very low.

In the 1890s, Harvard psychologists William James and BorisSidis first reported that a normal human being can only use 10 percent of hisbrains abilities and this is true. The same thing was said by American authorLovell Thomas. Then in the 1970s, Bulgarian-born psychologist and teacherGeorgi Lozanov said that humans use only 5 percent of their brain capacity.

This means that we should not be confused about the capacity of the brain and the use of the brain part. And you can know that the capacity of the brain is a psychological word and the use of the brain part is a biological word.

Learn To Use Your Time Properly

Friends, many people do not even know how to use their timeproperly. They feel that what they are doing is right and with the help ofsmall tasks, they will increase the use of their brain. But friends, in orderto succeed in any work, you must use the time properly.

There are two types of people inside this world. One isthose who know how to use their brains 100% and use their time properly whileworking fast enough. And others are those who take no care of their time.Friends, time is of great importance to increase the use of mind. If your timehas passed once, then after that it will not come back no matter what you do.

If a man could develop the abilities of his mind in childhood,if he does now, then it will be very difficult to reach that level. He willhave a lot of problems and will be left behind by others.

    How To Become Limitless

The point of becoming Limitless is to completely satisfy our curiosity and accomplish all of the things we hope to cross off our list:

If we want to read more often, we can fly through books at a rapid pace while retaining all of the knowledge required.

If we want to write a book, it can be done in a matter of days or weeks, instead of years .

If we want to learn a language, within a few weeks we can speak the language and interact with native speakers. No need for years and years of studying

If we want to get in better shape, we can do so in an efficient way, without spending hours on a treadmill struggle to see results.

Im sure if you have a bucket list like I do your goals probably revolve around some variation of the above.

So, how can we start accomplishing more and sucking less?

It comes down to a few key things:

    • The ability to retain more information.
    • The ability to spend more time learning.
    • Making the time you spend learning be more efficient.
    • The ability to learn lots of different things quickly.

Why Some Humans Smarter Than Others

The next question that rapidly creeps our mind is that, if we all humans use the same amount of brain then how are some of them smarter than the remaining. This question raised the eyebrows of many scientists and soon an explanation was provided, smartness is related to cognitive plasticity which refers to the adaptive changes in patterns of cognition related to brain activity. The study of Einsteins brain proved that it contained the same number of neurons when compared to an average human beings brain. However, it did contain more astrocytes which also acts as a link between two neural cells. Now it is on the diversity of the neurons it contains that provides a reason for why some people are smarter.

How Much Of Our Brain Do We Actually Use Then

Brain imaging research has revealed that while the whole brain is always active, certain networks dial up or dial down depending on what weâre doing or trying to achieve.

âThe entire brain is active all the time â even when weâre asleep, weâre using our whole brain,â says Rebecca.

âWhen youâre at rest, activity in a network of brain regions called the default mode network is dialled up,â Rebecca explains. âIf you jump up to kick a football around, that network will dial down, and your motor coordination networks will dial up. Itâs a dynamic balance of activity between our brain networks itâs not like thereâs 90% waiting to be used.â

That doesnât mean that we canât enhance our brainpower, however. âWe have far more power to change our brains than was ever thought possible, and thatâs very exciting,â Rebecca says. âHow we live our lives, indisputably, has a profound impact on the structure of our brain, the function of our brain and the health of our brain.â

âThe brain makes up just 2-3% of our body weight but takes up 20% of our daily energy,â says Rebecca.

Effects Of Technology Advancement On The Brain

Technology has been a boon for our generation however in todays world, technology affects our brain negatively. In many cases, it has been observed that internet/gaming addiction leads to shrinkage of tissue volume in the brain. Apart from this, it leads to anxiety, depression and sometimes to even suicidal thoughts thus disturbing our mental equilibrium. It is even recommended that we should stop relying on machines for basic functions such as calculators or GPS navigators. This way we do not allow our brains to exercise which in turn inhibits in expanding our brains beyond its limits.

Is There Such A Thing As Being Left

Well, your brain definitely has a left side and a right side . Each hemisphere controls certain functions and movement on the opposite side of your body.

Beyond that, the left brain is more verbal. Its analytical and orderly. It takes in the small details, and then puts them together to understand the whole picture. The left brain handles reading, writing, and calculations. Some call it the logical side of the brain.

The right brain is more visual and deals in images more than words. It processes information in an intuitive and simultaneous manner. It takes in the big picture, and then looks at the details. Some say its the creative, artsy side of the brain.

Theres a popular theory that people can be divided into left-brained or right-brained personalities based on one side being dominant. Left-brained people are said to be more logical, and right-brained people are said to be more creative.

After a two-year analysis , a team of neuroscientists found no evidence to prove this theory. Brain scans showed that humans dont favor one hemisphere over the other. Its not likely that the network on one side of your brain is substantially stronger than the opposite side.

As with most things relating to the human brain, its complicated. While each hemisphere has its strengths, they dont work in isolation. Both sides contribute something to logical and creative thinking.

    Meditation For Increasing Brain Power

    " Morgan Freeman" Meme Templates

Friends, do you know how important it is to meditate? When you meditate, you focus on one thing. Meditation increases the concentration of human beings. And if a person can concentrate for a long time, it means that he can learn things very quickly. Because of increased concentration, you can increase the capacity of your mind at rest. You also know that concentration helps us to do things better.

To understand it well, try taking it on yourself. Many times when you sit reading, suddenly a lot of non-essential thoughts start coming in your mind. And you know very well that these thoughts also affect you a lot. They dont even let you read. The arrival of such thoughts proves that you have a problem with concentration.

To increase your concentration and use 100% of your brain, try to wake up daily and meditate. At first, it will be quite difficult but after that, you can increase the time of meditation daily. 4 Just like you spent 10 minutes meditating first, on the second day you can increase the time to 20 minutes. Friends, I have seen many people who cannot sit for anywhere for an hour, meditation is far away. Such people are very less able to awaken their brain abilities.

    The Battle In Your Brain

Its true that increased connectivity between neurons is associated with greater ability. Studies have shown that musicians, who play stringed instruments, have larger areas of their brains dedicated to their active hands. Brain scans of London taxi drivers have revealed that the more years a driver has on the job correlates to a larger portion of their brain being recruited to store spatial information.

These findings demonstrate Hebbs law: neurons that fire together wire together and neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain to change its physical structure and function based on repeated experience, behavior, and thoughts. In the blog, The Battle In Your Brain, I write:

Every minute of every day theres a battle going on in your brain a battle for cortical real estate. Your experiences, behaviours, emotions, and even your thoughts are constantly, literally changing and shaping your brain.

You have a use or lose it brain. Any unused connections go dormant to free up resources needed to strengthen those connections that are most often used. Neuroplasticity is competitive, and functioning areas of the brain not receiving any stimuli will be quickly taken over. In experiments where participants were blindfolded, their visual cortices started reorganizing themselves to process sound in just two days!

Get Used To Writing And Reading

Friends, even if you have left school today and now you feel that there is no need to read and write, then you are thinking wrong. If you want to know about how to use 100% of your brain then you should maintain the habit of writing and reading.

If you have a habit of reading, then you can bring new books and read them. And there will be no loss from reading those books, but you will benefit only. Knowledge will increase and it will definitely work somewhere in your life. In a way, you are developing your brains abilities by reading.

And as far as writing is concerned, by writing, you alsolearn to express things. You will learn how to put your words in front ofothers only by writing.
