At birth, the newborn brain is in a transitional stage of development with an almost adult number of neurons but an immature set of connections . During the few months after birth, there is an overproduction of synapses accompanied by a process of synaptic elimination and stabilization, which lasts until adolescence . Myelination begins prenatally, but is not completed until the third decade in the frontal cortex where the highest executive functions and conscious thoughts take place .
Comparison between the maturation of thalamocortical-cortical connections and somatosensory evoked potentials . In the early preterm infant , thalamic axons establish a dense synaptic network in the subplate. After approximately 25 gestational weeks thalamic fibers make synapses in the deep cortical layers. In the full-term infants, the thalamic fibers have reached their final destination in layer IV of the cortex. This is reflected by the SEP responses. In the early preterms, the evoked responses consist only of long depolarizations of the deep layers. A delayed cortical activation can be seen. Baby Brain Development: Cognitive Development
Baby brain development technically begins during the third week of your pregnancy, when rapidly multiplying cells form whats called the neural plate. This structure eventually folds in on itself to become the neural tube, which later gives rise to the forebrain, midbrain, hindbrain, and spinal cord. As early as five weeks after conception, neurons the information-processing cells that pass signals throughout the central nervous system begin to form, divide, and multiply in these regions of your developing babys brain.
The most active period of baby brain development takes place during the middle of the second trimester, when 250,000 neurons are created every minute. The neurons begin to migrate to different regions of your developing babys brain, where they take on specific roles, such as interpreting sounds and storing memories, and form connections with other neurons – leading up to the sixth month of pregnancy.
During this time of heightened baby brain development, the cerebral cortex the area associated with the brains higher functions, such as language and abstract thought grows more rapidly than the brains other structures. By the seventh month of your pregnancy, it houses 70 percent of the neurons in your developing babys brain.

When Does A Fetus Develop A Healthy Brain
Neuron production in the fetus begins in week 3 post-conception during the embryonic period.
As neurons are produced, they migrate to different brain areas to form rudimentary structures of the developing brain, central nervous system, and peripheral nervous system.
This is a period of rapid neurological development and brain growth to create cortical and subcortical structures.
When Does A Fetus Develop A Brain
The brain begins with the neural tube, formed in the first month of the embryos growth. The neural tube closes around week 6 or 7, at which point the brain separates into three parts: front brain, midbrain, and hindbrain. These three parts will eventually develop into the specialized parts of the brain, and the cerebrum will fold into the left and right halves of the brain.

Never smoke or drink while you are pregnant. For instance, alcohol use can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome. It also can interfere with the development of cognitive brain cells. In fact, drinking during pregnancy often leads to lower IQs, poor cognitive skills, attention deficits, impulsive behavior, and even poor coordination. Meanwhile, nicotine reduces the blood flow and nutrition to your baby because it constricts your blood vessels. It also impacts cognitive brain cells.
What Genes Are Related To Anencephaly
Anencephaly is a complex condition that is likely caused by the interaction of multiple genetic and environmental factors. Some of these factors have been identified, but many remain unknown.
Changes in dozens of genes may influence the risk of anencephaly. The best-studied of these genes is MTHFR, which provides instructions for making a protein that is involved in processing the B-vitamin folate . Changes in other genes related to folate processing and genes involved in the development of the neural tube have also been studied as potential risk factors for anencephaly. However, none of these genes appear to play a major role in causing the condition.
Researchers have also examined environmental factors that could contribute to the risk of anencephaly. A shortage of folate appears to play a significant role. Studies have shown that women who take supplements containing this vitamin before they get pregnant and very early in their pregnancy are significantly less likely to have a baby with anencephaly or a related neural tube defect. Other possible risk factors for anencephaly include diabetes mellitus, obesity, exposure to high heat in early pregnancy, and the use of certain anti-seizure medications during pregnancy. However, it is unclear how these factors may influence the risk of anencephaly.

How Many Brain Cells Does A Child Have
An infants brain at birth has roughly 86 billion neurons1, almost all the neurons the human brain will ever have2.

From Conception To Age Three: An Outline Of Early Brain Development
The development of the brain begins in the first few weeks after conception. Most of the structural features of the brain appear during the embryonic period ; these structures then continue to grow and develop during the fetal period .19,20
The first key event of brain development is the formation of the neural tube. About two weeks after conception, the neural plate, a layer of specialized cells in the embryo, begins to slowly fold over onto itself, eventually forming a tube-shaped structure. The tube gradually closes as the edges of the plate fuse together; this process is usually complete by four weeks after conception. The neural tube continues to change, eventually becoming the brain and spinal cord.20,21
About seven weeks after conception the first neurons and synapses begin to develop in the spinal cord. These early neural connections allow the fetus to make its first movements, which can be detected by ultrasound and MRI even though in most cases the mother cannot feel them. These movements, in turn, provide the brain with sensory input that spurs on its development. More coordinated movements develop over the next several weeks.22
Early in the second trimester, gyri and sulci begin to appear on the brains surface; by the end of this trimester, this process is almost complete. The cerebral cortex is growing in thickness and complexity and synapse formation in this area is beginning.20,21,23

Critical Periods And Sensitive Periods In The Developing Brain
Within early childhood, there are windows of time when different regions of the brain become relatively more sensitive to life experiences.
These periods of time are called critical periods or sensitive periods.
During a critical period, synaptic connections in those brain regions are more plastic and malleable. Connections are formed or strengthened given the appropriate childhood experiences. After the critical period has passed, the synapses become stabilized and a lot less plastic.
For example, a young child can learn a new language and attain proficiency more easily before puberty. So the sensitive period for language development is from birth to before puberty.
Another example is emotional regulation. Emotional self-regulation forms the foundation of the brain architecture. Its a persons ability to monitor and regulate emotions. Emotional regulation is strongly linked to the development of social skills9, future learning and success in school10.
Emotion regulation is not a skill were born with. Yet its an essential skill in a childs healthy development11.
The sensitive period of learning this crucial life skill is before a child turns two. Critical or sensitive period is another reason why early life experiences matter so much.

In fact, the most important factor in optimal brain growth is to live a healthy lifestyle, which includes eating a healthy diet and exercising. It is also important for pregnant women to eliminate alcohol and cigarettes because these substances can impair the formation and wiring of brain cells.
In The First Three Years A Childs Brain Has Up To Twice As Many Synapses As It Will Have In Adulthood
Now that were a little more familiar with the fundamentals of the brain, lets take a look at brain development in children. Between conception and age three, a childs brain undergoes an impressive amount of change. At birth, it already has about all of the neurons it will ever have. It doubles in size in the first year, and by age three it has reached 80 percent of its adult volume.8-10
Even more importantly, synapses are formed at a faster rate during these years than at any other time. In fact, the brain creates many more of them than it needs: at age two or three, the brain has up to twice as many synapses as it will have in adulthood . These surplus connections are gradually eliminated throughout childhood and adolescence, a process sometimes referred to as blooming and pruning.11

What Are The Types Of Congenital Brain Defects
Several types of congenital brain defects are caused by neural tube defects.
Early in fetal development, a flat strip of tissue along the back of the fetus rolls up to form the neural tube. This tube runs along most of the length of the embryo.
The neural tube typically closes between the third and fourth week after conception. It develops into the spinal cord with the brain at the top. If the tube doesnt close properly, the tissue within the tube cant develop properly. Neural tube defects that can occur as a result include:
Anencephaly: The head end of the neural tube fails to close, and a major portion of the skull and brain is missing. The missing portion of the skull means that brain tissue is exposed.
Encephalocele: A portion of the brain bulges through an opening in the skull. The bulge is often located along the front-to-back midline at the back of the skull.
Arnold-Chiari or Chiari II: Part of the cerebellum, a region of the brain that affects motor control, is shifted downward into the upper spinal column. This causes the brain or spinal cord to become compressed.
Other types of congenital brain defects develop within the structure of the brain:
Hydrocephalus: Also called fluid on the brain, this is an excessive buildup of cerebrospinal fluid caused by impaired circulation of the CSF. When there is excess fluid, it can put too much pressure on the brain.
Holoprosencephaly: The brain doesnt divide into two halves, or hemispheres.

When does life begin?
There is little consensus of when life begins:;the BBC has a good, simplified guide hereon the different stages of pregnancy where life could be interpreted as beginning: including when the foetus first moves, when the brain is fully developed, or when the foetus reaches viability .
But ultimately, as the guide states, theres no agreement in medicine, philosophy or theology as to what stage of foetal development should be associated with the right to life.
