From early stages of adolescence into adulthood, the brain experiences major growth and pruning. Initial developments begin near the back of the cortex, and tend to finish in the frontal areas . There are a couple key ways by which the brain changes during various stages of development including: myelination as well as synaptic pruning.

  • Myelination: The nerve fibers in your brain are covered with a substance called myelin. This helps provide insulation so that neurons can effectively transmit signals. During developmental stages, the process of myelination promotes healthy brain functioning and allows for more complex functions.
  • Synaptic pruning: This is a process by which brain synapses are selectively pruned or eliminated throughout brain development. The process of synaptic pruning tends to peak during teenage years, and wanes in later adolescence. It should be noted that the pruning occurs until the brain is fully developed . This allows for more efficient brain functioning.
  • Increased connectivity: The connections between brain regions appear to be strengthened, thus making communication more efficient. The brain is able to transmit greater amounts of information between regions and becomes better at planning, dealing with emotions, and problem solving.

    Neuroimaging technologies have made more information available about the structure and function of the human brain than ever before. Nonetheless, there is still a dearth of empirical evidence that allows us to anticipate behavior in the real world based on performance in the scanner . Linking brain scans to real-world functioning is hampered by the complex integration of brain networks involved in behavior and cognition. Further hindering extrapolation from the laboratory to the real world is the fact that it is virtually impossible to parse the role of the brain from other biological systems and contexts that shape human behavior . Behavior in adolescence, and across the lifespan, is a function of multiple interactive influences including experience, parenting, socioeconomic status, individual agency and self-efficacy, nutrition, culture, psychological well-being, the physical and built environments, and social relationships and interactions . When it comes to behavior, the relationships among these variables are complex, and they change over time and with development . This causal complexity overwhelms many of our âone factor at a timeâ explanatory and analytic models and highlights the need to continually situate research from brain science in the broader context of interdisciplinary developmental science to advance our understandings of behavior across the lifespan .

    Promoting Healthy Brain Development

    If you are under the age of 25 and your brain is not yet fully developed, you may want to take advantage of this critical period. This means that you can effectively be a co-creator in how your brain decides to mold itself. Engaging in healthy behaviors and giving your brain optimal stimulation will help ensure healthy prefrontal cortex development.

    Brain Maturity Extends Well Beyond Teen Years

      Under most laws, young people are recognized as adults at age 18. But emerging science about brain development suggests that most people don’t reach full maturity until the age 25. Guest host Tony Cox discusses the research and its implications with Sandra Aamodt, neuroscientist and co-author of the book Welcome to Your Child’s Brain.


      I’m Tony Cox and this is TELL ME MORE from NPR News. Michel Martin is away. We’d like to spend this part of the program talking about the passage from childhood to adulthood and how that may be tougher for one distinct group of young people.

      Most of the privileges and responsibilities of adulthood are legally granted by the age of 18. That’s when you can vote, enlist in the military, move out on your own, but is that the true age of maturity? A growing body of science says, no. That critical parts of the brain involved in decision-making are not fully developed until years later at age 25 or so.

      In a moment, we’ll hear about how child advocates are hoping to use this research to change the laws about their foster care. But first, to learn more about adolescent brain development and maturity, we are joined now by neuroscientist, Sandra Aamodt. She is the coauthor of the book, “Welcome to Your Child’s Brain: How the Mind Grows from Conception to College.”

        May Explain Why Women More Likely To Stay Mentally Sharp In Later Years

        Women’s brains appear to be three years younger than men’s of the same age, according to a new study on brain metabolism. The findings could explain why women maintain their cognitive skills longer than men.

        Time wears differently on women’s and men’s brains. While the brain tends to shrink with age, men’s diminish faster than women’s. The brain’s metabolism slows as people grow older, and this, too, may differ between men and women.

        A new study from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis finds that women’s brains appear to be about three years younger than men’s of the same chronological age, metabolically speaking. The findings, available online the week of Feb. 4 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could be one clue to why women tend to stay mentally sharp longer than men.

        “We’re just starting to understand how various sex-related factors might affect the trajectory of brain aging and how that might influence the vulnerability of the brain to neurodegenerative diseases,” said senior author Manu Goyal, MD, an assistant professor of radiology at the university’s Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology. “Brain metabolism might help us understand some of the differences we see between men and women as they age.”

        The relative youthfulness of women’s brains was detectable even among the youngest participants, who were in their 20s.

        Frontal Lobe: The Vital Part Of The Brain

        The Frontal lobe is a vital part of the brain and is the biggest of the different types of lobes. The frontal lobe is almost one-third of the size of the brain the other lobes combined make up two-thirds of the brain. The frontal lobe is located in the front portion of the head of a human body, under the skull and closer to the forehead.

        The frontal lobe is a part of the cerebral cortex. The cerebral cortex is the outer layer of the brain, which is usually gray in color and also has a popular name, gray matter.

        The frontal lobe is separated from the parietal lobe by a groove called central sulcus and is separated from the temporal lobe by a much deeper lobe called as the lateral sulcus.

        Different Parts Of A Frontal Lobe

        The frontal lobe can be divided into four different parts, which are known as the lateral part, polar part, orbital part and the medial part. Each of these parts has particular types of gyrus in them and they are:

        • The lateral part consists of superior frontal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus, and inferior frontal gyrus.
        • The polar part consists of transverse front polar gyri and front marginal gyrus.
        • The orbital part consists of lateral orbital gyrus, anterior orbital gyrus, posterior orbital gyrus, medial orbital gyrus, and gyrus rectus.
        • The medial part consists of superior frontal gyrus and cingulate gyrus.

        All of the gyri are separated by sulcus or sulci. The sulci are indentations or grooves in the brain, while gyri are the bends and folds.

        — New research from the UK shows the brain continues to develop after childhood and puberty, and is not fully developed until people are well into their 30s and 40s. The findings contradict current theories that the brain matures much earlier.

        Professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, a neuroscientist with the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London, said until around a decade ago many scientists had “pretty much assumed that the human brain stopped developing in early childhood,” but recent research has found that many regions of the brain continue to develop for a long time afterwards.

        The prefrontal cortex is the region at the front of the brain just behind the forehead, and is an area of the brain that undergoes the longest period of development. It is an important area of the brain for high cognitive functions such as planning and decision-making, and it is also a key area for social behavior, social awareness, for empathy and understanding and interacting with other people, and various personality traits. Prof. Blakemore said the prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain that makes us human, since there is such a strong link between this area of the brain and a persons personality.

        The research could explain why adults sometimes act like teenagers, sulking or having tantrums if they do not get their own way, and why some people remain socially uncomfortable until they are well out of their teens.

For example, in 13th century England, when feudal concerns were paramount, the age of majority was raised from 15 to 21 years, citing the strength needed to bear the weight of protective armor and the greater skill required for fighting on horseback . More recently, in the United States the legal drinking age has been raised to 21, whereas the voting age has been reduced to 18 years so as to create parity with conscription . Similarly, the minimum age to be elected varies by office in the U.S.: 25 years for the House of Representatives, 30 years for the Senate, and 35 years for President. However, individuals as young as 16 can be elected Mayor in some municipalities. The variation evident in age-based definitions of maturity illustrates that most are developmentally arbitrary . Nonetheless, having achieved the legal age to participate in a given activity often comes to be taken as synonymous with the developmental maturity required for it.

        What Parents Can Do

        If youre trying to make sense of it all and doing your best to support your teens growth, here are a few suggestions to consider:

        Discuss pros and cons with your teen. When your teen comes to you with a problem, help your teen identify the consequences or results of their actions. If there is a choice your teen must make, help them see the pros and cons of each choice. Because the prefrontal cortex is still developing, teens tend to be more impulsive. However, by helping them think through a situation, you help them make neural connections that build logical and rational thinking, which they will need as healthy and responsible adults.

        Show interest in your teen. With all the growth teens go through, they may feel an inability to relate to their parents or other members of the family. You can support your teen by showing interest in what they like, such as their music, games, hobbies, and other interests. This also helps build neural connections in their brain that what they are interested in matters to you.

        Encourage your teen to try new things. There is a lot of growth happening in the teen brain. The teen wants to try new things, explore the world, and role-play. A parent with a deeper understanding of a teens brain growth might encourage this for more neural connection and healthy growth.
