The Changes Of The Brain During Development
The brain experiences major growth and changing from adolescence until adulthood. There are a couple key ways by which the brain changes during stages of development. Those stages include:
Myelin is a fatty white substance that surrounds the axon of some nerve cells, forming an electrically insulating layer. It is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system. The production of the myelin sheath is called myelination or myelinogenesis. This process appears among humans begins in the 14th week of fetal development, although myelin exists in the childs brain from the moment of birth. Although it was once thought that the brain is fully mature around birth this hypothesis has been disproven now there is clear evidence that the brain does not mature fully until about age 24. During development in the womb as many as 250,000 new neurons are created each day. These neurons use spatial and chemical cues to find their synaptic targets. By the time we are born our brains contain billions of neurons with trillions of connections. However the infant brain contains far more neurons than are present in the adult brain.
During the subsequent months and through adolescence careful pruning of neuronal connections eliminates all but the most useful connections between neurons. The result is a thinning-out process that selects for those neuronal connections strengthened through repeated experience. In this sense cells that fire together wire together while those that do not make meaningful contacts do not survive. In other words use it or lose it! These early pruning processes not only establish the neuronal networks to support learning throughout life but also allow the brain to be sculpted based on a persons unique experiences.

What Is Synaptic Pruning In Early Brain Development
Synaptic pruning is a brain process in which unused neurons and neural connections are eliminated to increase efficiency in communication among neurons.
The network of synapses grows rapidly during the first year and continues to do so during toddlerhood. Childhood brain development is fast.
But not all of the synapses will remain as the childs brain grows.
Life experience will activate certain neurons, create new connections between neurons and strengthen existing connections, called myelination.
Unused connections will eventually be eliminated. This is called synaptic pruning4.

Stages Of Brain Development From Birth To 6 Years Old
While we are not able to offer an exact brain development timeline, we will do our best to give you an idea of the different stages of brain development during early childhood.
When your little one arrives, a lot of work and growth has already been done. However, theres still a lot more growing to do. At birth, your child already has almost all of the neurons theyll need for the rest of their lives, even though their brains are only 25% the size of an adult brain.
Because your baby is rapidly creating and pruning out synapses, this is a critical period for learning things.
Youre probably familiar with the soft spot on a babys head. These soft spots are called fontanelles, and they exist because your childs skull is not fully fused at birth. This serves the dual purpose of helping the head fit through the birth canal and allowing room for the brain to grow quickly during early childhood. At just three years old, your childs brain will be about 80% the size of an adult brain.
Early in your childs life, they will start to form synapses at a faster rate than at any other time of life. Theyre actually producing many more than they need, and not all of them will make it to adulthood. This allows them to learn things more quickly than adults do.
How Can Media Use Affect Brain Development
As the brain isnt fully developed until young adulthood, childrens media use can have a big impact on how their brains process information, outwardly affecting how they react to and remember events in any given situation. Current research offers the following examples of how childrens brain development is shaped by their media use and exposure:
- Some video games designed specifically for improving brain functions have shown to improve executive functioning, especially in children suffering from poor impulse control such as those with ADHD.
- In young children, television can negatively impact a variety of executive functions. In older children and teens, violent media can lead to poorer results on executive functioning tests. Conversely, some studies have determined that television watching can improve specific brain capabilities, such as intellect.
- Adolescents suffering from internet addiction may have lower grey matter as well as structural changes in the brain over time. Youth who suffer from other addictive tendencies may be more likely to become addicted to the Internet.
- Although multitasking with media can cover more ground, it can take children longer to accomplish a single task and the quality of their work suffers.

As we enter midlife, our brains change in subtle but measurable ways. The overall volume of the brain begins to shrink when were in our 30s or 40s, with the rate of shrinkage increasing around age 60. But, the volume loss isnt uniform throughout the brain some areas shrink more, and faster, than other areas.
