How The Right Brain Left Brain Theory Is Relevant To Artists
Using Sperry’s theory, it has been assumed that people with a dominant right brain are more creative. This makes sense under the right brain left brain concept.
- When you start a painting, you need to be able to visualize the final painting in your mind .
- You then develop the painting, choose the elements, match and mix colors, place the shadows and highlights, etc. .
- At the same time, you need to be able to look critically at what you have done and are doing .
Based on this theory, if you know that your thinking is dominated by either your right or left brain, you can then deliberately set out to use the right brain way of thinking in your painting or drawing. It’s certainly better than working on autopilot. By trying a different strategy you will probably be surprised by what different results you can produce.
Yet, if the theory is a myth, can you really train your brain to work differently? Just like you can learn how to paint, it is possible to change certain habits of the brain, and it doesn’t matter what the science is behind that. It just happens and you can control it. Let the scientists worry about the technicalities there are paintings to create!
You can learn to use a right-brain way of thinking by simply changing behaviors and putting ideas into practice and remaining conscious of your thought process. We do it throughout our life , so does it really matter that it is not really our right-brain taking over our thinking? Absolutely not.

Another surprising discovery about the science of creativity was made by researchers Charles Limb and Allen Braud, who performed brain imagery scans on jazz musicians. While the musicians made spontaneous compositions, several higher brain functions in the prefrontal cortex were suppressed. This part of the brain is associated with conscious control as well as self-monitoring. Perhaps the folk psychology idea that the critic must be silenced during creative thought is reflected in these findings. Limb and Braud also report that the limbic centers of the brain are unregulated during creative improvision, providing neurological support for the role of heightened emotion during creative pursuits.

Sperry argued that people tend to use one side of their brain more than the other, and that this affects their thinking, creativity, and the types of hobbies, skills, and jobs they do best. But does this hypothesis hold up with the decades of research that have emerged since Sperry initially put out his groundbreaking idea?
The Brain And Creativity
The brain is divided into two hemispheres the right and left. The right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, with the left side dominant over the right. No Evidence From Brain Scans That People Are Right
This popular notion was debunked in 2013 by University of Utah neuroscientists who used brain imaging to show there is NO evidence that people are right-brained or left-brained.
A team from the University of Utah scanned the brains of 1,011 people between the ages of seven and 29. They used a technique called resting-state functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging forget about that mouthful for now. The study tested the idea that one half of a persons brain is more active, more connected and more synchronised than the other.
The team divided each persons brain into over 7,000 regions and examined each region to see if it showed stronger activity on the left or the right side of the brain. They also looked for connections between regions that were more localised to one hemisphere or the other.
Because, as Jared Nielsen, a PhD student who worked on the study, said
we just dont see patterns where the whole left-brain network is more connected or the whole right-brain network is more connected in some people. It may be that personality types have nothing to do with one hemisphere being more active, stronger, or more connected.
Neuroscientist Dr Jeff Anderson, lead author of the study, said,
Its absolutely true that some brain functions occur in one or the other side of the brain. Language tends to be on the left, attention more on the right.
But people dont tend to have a stronger left- or right-sided brain network.

Speaking to the BBCs Inside Science program, Rebecca described how the people who were better at drawing appeared to have more developed structures in those regions of the brain that control fine motor performance.
She also highlighted another area where the art students brains were different, in that the regions for procedural memory were more developed than in their non-artistic counterparts.
What is procedural memory and how does this relate to an artistic side of the brain? Its memory allocated by your brain for performing particular actions, such as tying the laces in your sneakers or reading a book. You dont even have to think about it you just do it on autopilot.
Interestingly, procedural memory resides just below the level of conscious awareness. Its developed through procedural learning, where a complex action is repeated again and again until the neural systems in question all work together to produce the activity automatically.

S Of The Brain That Influence Creativity
Creativity can be described loosely as the application of novel solutions and possibilities to some aspect of human endeavor. Creativity is easy to identify but notoriously difficult to measure. However, armed with the latest generation of brain imagery technologies, neuroscientists have made real gains in isolating where creativity lives in the brain. Many parts of the brain influence creativity, and, surprisingly, just as important are the parts of the brain that are not active during creative reverie.

Does Gender Matter
Studies linking creativity to brain wiring have given us mixed results. Depending on how you measure and define it, some studies show that greater connectivity between the hemispheres enhances creativity, while others show the opposite.
The effect might even be different for men and women. In one study, men and women were tested for creativity using four divergent thinking tasks. The experimenters then computed a creativity index based on their performance. Male and female subjects didnt differ on average concerning this score. But the relationship between connectivity and the creativity score was different for men and women. In highly creative women, there was less connectivity between different brain regions and more regions were activated by the tasks. The authors interpret this finding as suggesting that women recruit more of the brain when thinking creatively.

So which one is it: More modularity or more connectivity? The truth is that were not even aware of the vast majority of what our brains are doing, even when were considering important decisions or thinking creatively. Our conscious awareness is just the tip of the iceberg. As Gazzaniga shows us in later studies, our conscious interpretation of why we do the things we do isnt even necessarily true.
