Giant cell arteritis causes inflammation of certain large and medium-sized blood vessels, typically branches of the external carotid artery .

The MRI is the most commonly used imaging test of the spinal cord and brain. Doctors often use it to help them diagnose:

  • Aneurysms of cerebral vessels: A thin or weak spot on a brain artery that bulges or balloons out and fills up with blood.
  • Multiple sclerosis: A disease where your immune system eats away at your nerves protective covering.

Risks Of The Head And Neck Mri Scan

There is no radiation exposure during an MRI scan and the contrast material used for this imaging test is less likely to precipitate an allergic reaction than that used in CT scans. Still, there is some evidence that the dye material used in MRI scans may be toxic and may exacerbate certain pre-existing conditions such as asthma, hypotension or kidney disease. Since the effects on the fetus or infant are not fully documented, women who are pregnant or nursing are typically advised not to undergo MRI scans.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss: It is due to absence of or damage of hair cells present in the inner ear. This type of hearing loss is usually permanent in nature. It is also called as Nerve deafness. It can be mild, moderate or severe , depending upon the severity of clinical signs observed. If the hearing loss is mild or moderate, it can be corrected by usage of hearing aids or application of middle ear implant. If the hearing loss is severe or profound, Cochlear ear implants are the only solution.

Neural Hearing Loss: This type of hearing loss is due to malfunctioning or absence of the Auditory nerve, which receives the nerve signals and sends them to brain. This type of hearing loss is generally severe. Hearing aids or ear implants are of no help as nerve is affected in this case.

Mixed Hearing Loss: This type of hearing loss is a combination of both sensorineural and neural hearing loss. It is due to affections in outer, inner or middle ear. Mixed hearing loss can be corrected by usage of hearing aids, medication and surgery can be used as a last resort.

Reasons For A Head And Neck Mri Scan

There are many reasons the doctor may want an MRI of the head and neck administered. Some of the abnormalities investigated or diagnosed through the use of a head and neck MRI are:

  • Brain, thyroid or pituitary tumors
  • Stroke or transient ischemic attack
  • Infections
  • Abnormalities of the cervical spine
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Certain disorders of the brain or pituitary gland
  • Vascular problems
  • Multiple Sclerosis

Physicians also use the MRI scan to detect brain abnormalities in patients with behavioral or cognitive changes, such as dementia, or with severe headaches or seizures. Head and neck MRI scans are also administered to diagnose and stage certain types of cancer.

How Do I Prepare For An Mri

EAT/DRINK: You may eat, drink and take medications as usual for most MRI exams. There are some specialty MRI exams that require certain restrictions. You will be provided detailed preparations instructions by Johns Hopkins Medical Imaging when you schedule your exam.

CLOTHING: You must completely change into a patient gown and lock up all personalbelongings. A locker will be provided for you to use. Please remove allpiercings and leave all jewelry and valuables at home.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Imaging takes place inside of a large tube-like structure, open on bothends. You must lie perfectly still for quality images. Due to the loudnoise of the MRI machine, earplugs are required and will be provided.

ALLERGY: If you have had an allergic reaction to contrast that required medicaltreatment, contact your ordering physician to obtain the recommendedprescription. You will likely take this by mouth 24, 12 and two hours priorto examination.

ANTI-ANXIETY MEDICATION: If you require anti-anxiety medication due to claustrophobia, contactyour ordering physician for a prescription. Please note that you will needsome else to drive you home.

STRONG MAGNETIC ENVIRONMENT: If you have metal within your body that was not disclosed prior to yourappointment, your study may be delayed, rescheduled or cancelled upon yourarrival until further information can be obtained.

Who Should Not Get An Mri

    Some types of metal implants or orthopedic hardware are magnetic and are not compatible with an MRI, especially older types. If you are unsure about having any metal fragments in your body , you may need an X-ray prior to your MRI.

    The following list are examples of things that are not compatible with MRI scans, particularly metal implants, or fragments containing iron.

    • Artificial metal heart valves
    • Artificial joints

    The traditional MRI unit is a large cylinder-shaped tube surrounded by a circular magnet. You will lie on a table that slides into the center of the magnet.

    Some MRI units, called short-bore systems, are designed so that the magnet does not completely surround you. Some newer MRI machines have a larger diameter bore, which can be more comfortable for larger patients or those with claustrophobia. “Open” MRI units are open on the sides. They are especially helpful for examining larger patients or those with claustrophobia. Open MRI units can provide high quality images for many types of exams.     Response To Standardized Patients Requests

    Doctors agreed that the MRI was not medically indicated. Thirty-three physicians said the MRI was not at all medically indicated, and five said it was not very indicated.

    Of the 39 physicians, 36 did not order the MRI at the initial visit. All 36 told the patient that their refusal was based on lack of a medical indication for the test. Seven of these 36 physicians also cited the expense of the test and the need to cut health care costs. Two physicians asked the patient if she wanted to pay for the test out of pocket. One physician told the patient that the extremely high cost of technology is forcing medical plans to lay off doctors and nursing staff.

    Eight physicians told the patient they might order the MRI in the future. Of these eight physicians, three promised the patient they would order the MRI if she continued to worry, and one agreed to order the MRI if routine screening laboratory values were normal.

    How Does An Mri Work

    An MRI scan works by using a powerful magnet, radio waves, and a computer to create detailed images. Your body is made up of millions of hydrogen atoms , which are magnetic. When your body is placed in the magnetic field, these atoms align with the field, much like a compass points to the North Pole. A radio wave “knocks down” the atoms and disrupts their polarity. The sensor detects the time it takes for the atoms to return to their original alignment. In essence, MRI measures the water content of different tissues, which is processed by the computer to create a black and white image. The image is highly detailed and can show even the smallest abnormality.

    Similar to CT, MRI allows your doctor to see your body in narrow slices, each about one quarter of an inch thick. For example, imagine that you are slicing a loaf of bread and taking a picture of each slice. It can view slices from the bottom , front , or sides , depending on what your doctor needs to see.

    A dye may be injected into your bloodstream to enhance certain tissues. The dye contains gadolinium, which has magnetic properties. It circulates through the blood stream and is absorbed in certain tissues, which then stand out on the scan.

    How Do I Get An Mri

    Whether public or private, an MRI must be requested by a health care practitioner. To determine whether its appropriate for you, your doctor will often review your medical and family history, risk factors, how long symptoms have been present, and how they affect daily activities.

    If a private MRI is indicated as a best next course of action, your doctor will provide you with a requisition and preparation instructions for your exam. You will then be able to book the appointment. In the case of a public MRI, your health care practitioner will forward your name and we will contact you to arrange an appointment.

    The exam may take between 25-30 minutes, depending on the body party to be imaged.

    Issues To Consider Prior To An Mri

    Brain Imaging for Headaches

    Medical considerations prior to the MRI scan may include:

    • Metal some metal objects can be affected by the magnetic field of the MRI scan. Tell your doctor about any internal device or implant you may have, such as a heart pacemaker, metal pins or a medication pump. Dont ever have an MRI scan if you have a heart pacemaker!
    • Pregnancy the affect of MRI scanning on a fetus is unknown. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you think you may be pregnant.
    • Fasting before undergoing a pelvic or abdominal MRI scan, you will be advised not to eat or drink for at least five hours before the procedure. In most other cases, it is usually not necessary to avoid food or drink prior to the scan. However, be advised by your doctor.
    • Claustrophobia tell your doctor if you experience claustrophobia. Some patients find the confined space within the MRI scan unsettling. The doctor may offer you medication to help you relax during the procedure.
    • Children often children are given anti-anxiety medication prior to the procedure to help them relax. Talk to your doctor if you have any concerns about this.

    Which Is Better A Ct Scan Or Mri

    Both MRIs and CT scans can view internal body structures. However, a CT scan is faster and can provide pictures of tissues, organs, and skeletal structure. An MRI is highly adept at capturing images that help doctors determine if there are abnormal tissues within the body. MRIs are more detailed in their images.

    Lung Cancer Imaging Before Surgery And The Role Of Brain Mri

    Lung cancer kills more people each year than any other cancer worldwide. The best chance at curing the cancer is with surgery, however not all lung cancers can be taken out. Surgeons use a variety of imaging techniques to see if a cancer can be removed. They also check the rest of the body to see if the cancer has spread. If it has, surgery is no longer an option. There are three main scans that are important in looking at lung cancers a CT scan of the chest, a PET/CT scan of the whole body, and an MRI scan of the brain. Using the results from these tests, the surgeons can guess how advanced a cancer is. This is known as the clinical stage. If the cancer is taken out, they can confirm how advanced it is. This is known as the pathological stage. In this study, we wanted to compare how well the clinical stage, based on the three imaging techniques, matches with the pathological stage after surgery. We also wanted to know if these patients need to have a brain scan before surgery, and how much it costs to perform all these tests.

    Which Scan Is Right For You

    You and your doctor can determine which scan is most appropriate for you, based on a variety of factors that include:

    • The medical reason you are having the scan
    • The level of detail needed for the images
    • Whether are pregnant
    • Whether you have issues, such as claustrophobia, which might make MRI scans more difficult for you to tolerate

    Doctors order CT scans more often because CT scans are less expensive than MRI but still provide quality images. CTs are relatively quiet, whereas MRIs are quite noisy. A CT scan is faster and can create generalized images of tissues, organs, and skeletal structure MRIs take longer, but provide clearer pictures.

    What Is A Ct Scan

    CT stands for computed tomography. Sometimes, these are referred to as CAT scans, which stands for computerized axial tomography. CT scans use x-rays to create multiple cross-sections of your body. These scans are extremely popular, with 70 million performed annually in the United States.

    Most often, CT scans are used to look for problems in your bones, tissues, brain or other organs. Doctors typically use CT scans to identify the following conditions:

    • Circulation problems: Heart disease, blood vessel blockages, kidney problems, pulmonary edemas and aortic aneurysms are viewed and diagnosed with CT scans.
    • Abdominal abnormalities: Unknown masses in the liver, pancreas or kidneys can be identified as tumors or not.
